This Torah class is brought to you by TorahAnytime.com. We have Avraham Avinu's kevuras Sarah, Levayah, kevurah, obtaining the Mearas HaMachpeilah, the kinyan. There's a machlokes rishonim if this event of misas Sarah, kevuras Sarah, is one of the asarah nisyonos. According to many rishonim, like we mentioned last week, the akeidah was the last of the ten nisyonos. Rashi, the Rambam in Pirush Mishnayos in Avos, perek hei, mishnah gimmel, the Rav on the Mishnah there as well, list the ten. Finalizing is the akeidah. That's the final nisayon, the tenth one. Rabbeinu Yonah, as well as the Ramban here in the parashah, pasuk yud tes, the Ramban, Rabbeinu Yonah, learn that this is actually one of the ten nisyonos, misas Sarah. In fact, that Avraham is coming, vayakom me'al pnei meiso, he is burying Sarah, he's being maspid Sarah, he's buying the land for the Mearas HaMachpeilah. In here, somewhere within this episode is the tenth nisayon of the asarah nisyonos. What is the nisayon? Where is the nisayon in the story of— Misas Sara, kevuras Sara. So the Ramban learns that the nisayon was that the Ribono Shel Olam promised him, Eretz Yisroel is yours. He comes to Eretz Yisroel, and what's the welcome he gets? The welcome he gets is he gets to pay for Kever, achat kevurah for Sarah. Why did he get it for free? It's his. It belongs to him after all the nisyonos and after everything he went through. Suddenly, Rabbeinu Nachman, he has to go and buy a makom in Eretz Yisroel for kevurah, v'lo hirher, v'lo hirher achar midosav. And he doesn't question the Eibishter. That's a nisayon, azei leibt der Ramban. The nisayon is that he went and he bought—bought?—buying his own, the Ribono Shel Olam's... It belongs to him. V'lo hirher. He doesn't think, azoi iz, azoi darf min ton, the Ribono Shel Olam vil azoi, and he does it. That's the mahalach of the Ramban. So Rashi doesn't count this as one of the nisyonos; the Ramban does. There's an interesting Chasam Sofer, Shem miGold, drush, nice vort. Zogt der Chasam Sofer, it's not so much the buying as much of what he was buying: achat kevurah. That's his welcome to Eretz Yisroel, zogt der Chasam Sofer. Normally a person comes, and now you have a palace, you have a nice... Very good. He has a house. What brought you to the neighborhood? Imagine if someone has to say what brought me to the neighborhood. ... Zogt zich some sefer of dem steht, ... v'seiliheinu k'meios latzeis. What's k'meios? Shteindik. We asked the Ribono Shel Olam, we shouldn't be brought to Eretz Yisrael to be buried there. K'meios, we should be brought there to live there. V'seiliheinu k'meios, standing and not laying, not saying. Zogt zich some sefer, famous drush. Bachal panim, this is the Ramban, that it's about the kinyan, the buying, the plot, the plot, the kvurah of Sarah. Others mefarshim, I don't think it's in the Rishonim. I tried to track it down in the Rishonim, but ... that the nisayon was, shedal sachfar, from the akeidah Sarah dies. That's the payback, so to speak, the tashlum of the akeidah. Against an akeidah, a duchikeh nisayon, un fun dem alein farlorn zayn eishes chayil, farlorn Sarah imeinu, un v'lo hirher. He's mekabel it, and that is the nisayon. ...
Point that I saw Reb Chaim Kanievsky in the sefer, in fact, chinuch kasha, so how could such a thing happen? Ay, the shluchei mitzvah ein nizokin, right? The shluchei mitzvah, and how could it be? And a gantze sugya. So we could talk and talk that the mitzvah was ta'avram and not the sarim, the koiches were given to Avram to survive it and not the sarim, Brisker Rav, Torah. Stam, your rav on Shabbos will give you this Torah, so I don't have to go through it, okay? Avram survived the nisayon, while Sarah imeinu couldn't. V'Chazal, tzaddekes, v'Avram and the teretz is, Brisker Rav zogt, whoever gets the nisayon gets the koiches to go through the nisayon. So I guess Sarah, it wasn't for Sarah; gam itzlechora also nisayon for her. Okay, we could be mefaelpel in a Chumash shiur. I was never told this is a Chumash shiur, so let's continue. Abeisei, efsher keminzogen, we have to a maaseh. What's the pshat that there was a nisayon? He came, he married his wife, he bought a maaras hamachpeilah. You look at the Rishonim, there was a big cheshbon to buy the maaras hamachpeilah. You know why? One day they're going to come and claim it's theirs, and they takke do. They takke do, even when we paid for it. There's no ... right, the nachalah, ... maaseh, it always belongs to them, okay? And that's with pay. Tells us, we didn't pay. So l'choirah, we could chip away at the nisayon. The story, she was an older woman, she died. ... Chazal say little bits, more chaf. Why? She was a zakeinah. Says ... she was an old woman. If you don't tie it like Rashi back to that cave. The pasuk, she died. She was an older woman, she died. That's why it was a small chaf according to many Rishonim, right? With keisah, small, small cry, a little cry, right? Let's speak other pshatim, why it was a small chaf. Bakol panim, you know, the woman, to buy it, who doesn't buy a plot? You want it to remain yours. Kefel das. Efsher kemin daher, the nisayon of Anandah. You notice Avraham Avinu almost begs Ephron that they should come and sell to him. What's the nusach that he uses? If you want to do chesed ve'emes, right? That's the lashon of the pasuk. Do a chesed shel emes. Speak. You should do chesed shel emes. What do we learn from here? Chazal learn from over here that whenever you do a levayah, it's called a chesed shel emes. Call it chesed shel emes. Why? Because you're not asking for any tashlum. You're not asking for anything back. What's a chesed shel emes? A levayah. Everybody knows, even on the funeral homes, it's called chesed shel emes. Levayah is a chesed shel emes. What's the chesed? You should do for me a chesed, right? B'yitei li, you should do it for me, for me, right? If you want to do a chesed for me, freg an alu mefarshim for me. Should have said, do it for Sarah. Who's the chesed shel emes to Avraham? The chesed shel emes was to Sarah. Why does he use a loshon, chesed, Sarah? It was also— I'm sorry, actually, I apologize. The question is the other way around. My head is already on the next shiur that I have to give, I apologize. If you want to do a chesed, do a chesed. L'choira, who did they do the chesed with? They did the chesed with him. He should have said, if you want to do a chesed with me, come. I'm asking you to do me the favor and give me the me'aras hamachpeilah. Why does he use the loshon, if you want to do, ligmol chesed im hameis? It's a chesed. If Avraham comes and gets the me'aras hamachpeilah that he wants, so the nusach is, do me the favor. Why is the havgashah it's the chesed shel emes for the meis? This is a freg in the Acharonim, a kasha. I have another shaylah, rabosai. Avraham comes, lispoid l'Sarah v'livkosah. It's mashma that who is the hesped for? It's for Sarah. There's a whole shailah in the Gemara, Sanhedrin: is the reason for a hesped yakar d'chayei or yakar d'meisei? Who is it for? The Gemara clarifies: is it the kavod of the meis, or is it the kavod of the chai, the one that...
The Efei Toar says that even though the Gemara comes l'maskana, the maskana is that it's taka yakar d'meis, af bishotn zich eichid yakar d'chai. It's also for the person, the family. So when you talk the shvachim, it's also for the family. It's supposed to give chizuk for the family as well. And this is already a zman, Choshen Mishpat, siman reish gimel, se'if katan samach tes. The Manig, the Rishonim argue and says it's only kavod hameis. It's nothing to do with the meis. So even the Rishonim that say that it's the meis, like it's mashma in the Gemara, it's the meis and the people. It's also the ones that are alive. The other Rishonim say, no, it's only a hesped, it's only for those that are alive. Rishonim come and behold, as hamanhig, haYetuchin, the Gemara, it's a pilpul she'einat for now. So why does it say, Vayavo Avram lispod l'Sarah? It doesn't say, Vayavo Avram lispod es Sarah. It says, lispod l'Sarah. The mashma'ut is the hesped was for Sarah. It was on Sarah, maybe for the yud, for the people. The nusach hapasuk of the daf zayin, Vayis... Vayavo Avram, not lispod. Mashma ki'ilu l'Sarah. And the mefarshim already talk, what the meis has from it, what does he have from it, kavod, mechtesach. It's a big discussion. And the pasuk, it's pretty clear: Vayavo Avram lispod l'Sarah. Mashma that what? It's for Sarah. It says, Vayavo Avram lispod Sarah. I have another shaila, beis. V'oznei bnei Cheis. The pasuk says that he spoke to the people, bnei Cheis, and the kfurah was, v'chol ba'ei sha'ar iro. Everybody showed up. Zugt Rashi, why did everybody show up? Ligmoil, to come and to give, the letzes l'kavod for Sarah. Habeisai, that is shayach to Sarah? I always thought about this question. It bothered me. There's a connection between the Rabbanit of Avraham to the people of bnei Cheis. What's the shaychus to the people? They all came. It says, v'chol ba'ei sha'ar iro. They closed their stores. Mitfamacht, mitgemacht. Complete closedown. What for? For the sake of Sarah, ligmoil chesed im Sarah. What was their shaychus to Sarah? Unless you say that we don't understand. Maybe Sarah was like a malka, just like Avraham was nesi Elokim. Stam shei was also. If he's the king, she must be the queen. ... hagdarah, that the eilem looked at her, and we just don't see it from the pesukim so much, but mistama, as emes b'mechabed, if they held him up in such regard as a nasi, so mistama they held her in regard that she was the queen. And therefore, everybody came. I thought about it. I don't like it that much, habeisai. It's been a while, year after year, and I think and I think. Sarah megayeres es hanashim, maybe it has to do with that. Everybody had shaychus with her, bnei Cheis, something. That nisin, how did she turn out? As they say, a million people for the levayah of, all right? That's the new nusach today. A million people showed up for a levayah. Everybody showed up for this levayah. Why? Why? What's the connection? Chabosai, mir darf tzach a yesod, okay? So you hear the questions? Does everybody hear the shailas? Nachon. The shailos given: basar de-greise nisayon. It's life. Husband lived, she died, she was old, he buried her. That's what happens. Husband takes care of the burial of his wife. I'll soon show you where I saw this kasha, one of the great baalei mussar asked this kasha. Second shailah is, chesed v'emes, what for Sarah? What about for him? He should say, Do me. Do me a chesed. Give me the place. I'm looking for a burial place. Also, why does it say, lispod, lispoch? Chesed, that ki'ilu the hesped was for Sarah. Going to many, it's also for you, Avraham. It's also for the people. What's the nusach, lispod, lispoch? Also, how did it turn out? Everybody came. Everybody. Ligmol chesed, tan chesed. Es tut zich. Chabosai, mir darf tzach.
Avraham Avinu came to this levayah, and he set a new yesod in chesed. Just like Avraham Avinu, his whole life had eingepflanzt maaseh chesedim, maaseh kiruv rechokim, maaseh emunah. Wherever he went, Avraham Avinu founded yesodos haTorah in these inyanim. Avraham went, he made himself a nation, a yesod of what's called hachnasas orchim. Avraham did a bris, what it means to have a bris. Avraham went lamilchamah, what it means to have ne'emanus, to be honest, to keep you. Wherever he went, hatavekeshtelt yesodei yesodos, foundations in the briyah, in the world, of inyanim of Torah, of taryag mitzvos, of emunah, Torah and chesed. We know, Chazal tell us that the greatest of all chasadim is the chesed shel emes. Avraham Avinu's pflanzt איין in der parshah, Rebbeisei, chesed shel emes, what it means kevurah. What it means, machin kevurah far tzveitn, that it's not just chesed, it's called chesed shel emes. With this, Rebbeisei, I think we can understand what's the pshat that Avraham himself negotiates with Efron, Eliezer. Efratach avadim. If I may use a term of American modern terms, my peoples will get together with your peoples and we'll negotiate, right? ... Who doesn't have my peoples and your peoples, right? Ephraim. Ephraim had his people, Bnei Ches. He had to speak to the Bnei Ches to go speak to Efron. Who comes? Look at, דווקא Eliezer. Eliezer should go speak to the Bnei Ches. Not the maaseh. Do me a favor, my, my, my wants to speak to yous and let me... Vayavo Avraham. Chesed shalemes. Avraham, gate aleihem. That's a chesed. That's Avraham Flanstain, what it means. Avraham is founding now the inyan of kevuras hameis, what it means to be koveir a meis. ... to kabbalas haTorah. He goes himself. Shluchei shel adam kemoso, ... b'mitzvah yoser mibishlucho. He has shlichus mitzvah. ... Midem fashteich, Vayavo Avraham lispod l'Sarah ulivkosah. Avada there's a chelek of Yaakov d'chayim. Avada. Avada a chelek of the hesped is for the person himself. But that's not what Avraham came for. Avraham came strictly lispod l'Sarah. It was about Sarah. Listen, my boys. I'm telling you, emes la'amito, you say the hadas. I hope that you say the hadas when I'm speaking now. The capability of going to a levaya and to be mizbatel, but it's not about you at all. It's about the meis, it's about kavod hameis. There's a world out there that comes to levaya, and it becomes about them. Avadeh they'll speak about the meis and this and that, but deep down, it's about them. Mitatzelti bavitz, that in Telz they said it's really asur to be maspid a meis. Why? Because a meis is asur b'hana'ah. Say Flektn zogen. It's asur b'hana'ah. It's a very sharp word, but it has so much truth to it. The baalei mussar said things that right, right clearly without having any hesitation. Azoi s'Flektn zogen in Telz, haysoi, that's something gedavt asur in zogn a hesped. Havas, a meis asur b'hana'ah. That's baalei mussar. They understood, and a Yid is able to get up, and it shouldn't be about him. It's Vayavo Avram lispod l'Sarah.
Now I understand what he says: Don't do for me the chesed. I asked you, kasha, I say chesed v'emes. Yeah, go do a chesed v'emes for Sarah. For Sarah. What about for him? The teretz is, it's not about me. It's strictly about chesed shel emes. And maybe the nekudah of emes, avad the Chazal say that he's not looking for any tashlum. What does it really mean? It means it's emes of chesed without zikah. There's no zikah there. There's nothing about the person. A levayah, a levayah is v'halachta bidrachav. Chazal say, what's a chelek of v'halachta bidrachav? Mah Hu kover meisim, af atah kover meisim. It's one of the v'halachta bidrachav. The whole world, the whole world doesn't bury chaim. Other mikrim, good, does chanayah mishpachah. But pashut, people bury people, right? That's not called v'halachta bidrachav. That's, there's no shaychus to v'halachta bidrachav. That's medafes ton tutn. The inyan of kover meisim, opton yenem dem chesed shel emes, to do the chesed shel emes is the Ribono Shel Olam's emes. It's all about the Ribono Shel Olam. I spoke to you from the Sfas Emes a few weeks ago about this. Why is it called chesed shel emes? Because it only comes from the Torah's hachesed. I don't understand why people don't bury people. Eina doimeh. The kefurah that Avraham is showing, that Avraham Avinu is completely not hisbatlus. There's no Avraham. It's about sarah, it's about kavod hameis, it's about yenem completely. And that's called chesed shel emes. With this, I think we can explain that everybody came ligmol chesed, lashon Rashi. They all came ligmol chesed l'Sarah. Wait a minute, chesed l'Sarah? If it's the pshat, they came because she was famous. You see, it's deeper than that, chaveirim. You know what the Bnei Chei saw in Avraham Avinu? What it means, chesed. Avraham, when he came to the levayah, they started to understand for the first time the chesed and what it means, a levayah. Says Rashi, shebo'u kulam ligmol chesed im Sarah. Avraham was mashpia on them. The same way Avraham was mashpia emunah, the same way Avraham Avinu was mashpia chesed, he was mashpia chesed shel emes. U'bo'u kulam, they all closed their stores, ligmol chesed, to do chesed l'Sarah. With this, chaveirai, I think we can explain an interesting thing. In avelin is patur from all mitzvos. An avel doesn't do any mitzvos, nothing. Ganzt. Afilu kriyas Shema macht er doch nicht. Pela. Does anybody know the reason for that? A lot of people are not clear on the reason. It's a very simple thing. Ha'osek b'mitzvah is patur min ha'mitzvah. But you can't take care of the levaiyah if you make a bracha. So let's talk a little bit. Der shaylah b'alamo gebatet, alamo gebatet. You helped out maaseh. Remember, my zeide was niftar. Niftar on a Shabbos. We were in the bungalow colony. The police of upstate came on Feld, and they came on horses to tell that my zeide was niftar. My father was in his bungalow. The first person out there was Rav Barnstein, zichrono livracha. He was from the OU, and if anyone remembers, from once there was a Bornstein, a vaylige lebtshenish. He got the news. He says, I'm not going to decide with the people. There was a tzibbur there, one of the tzibburs were on the ground. We're not telling till after Shabbos. After Shabbos, right after Shabbos, they told my father, and he avada, he didn't make havdalah. He didn't make any plans. I mean, there were no plans then. He was told they're taking him in and would come to New York. The plans started to begin once he came to... So why is he patur? He's not anyway making any plans. I never... I always was shteiging, havdalah, ken doch afilu k'bracha nisht machen. Vos is der pshat? So I always thought there's a vort from Reb Elchonon, my zeide, that never understood aisy from mitzvahs patur min hamitzvah. Why?
Toveida. Says the Chofetz Chaim said that when he saw the Chofetz Chaim do mitzvahs, hatefachtani. Chavos, he put so much into every mitzvah, there was nothing left over for the second mitzvah. Zei flegt zei zogn for the Rabbeinu, that when he saw the Chofetz Chaim do a mitzvah, ס'איז נישט געבליבן קיין שטיקל Chofetz Chaim, there was nothing left of him anymore. Der gantzer mensch, der gantzer mahus, der gantzer machshavos are in that mitzvah. Zogt mir abeisei, s'iz al bezach, ven es kumt to oinen, the whole head, or maybe the taych is, habeisei, kovod hameis. The kovod hameis, and if you look at the Rishonim, I don't have time to be ma'arich, it's muchlokes in the Rishonim, it's a chelek of the osek b'mitzvah of kovod hameis. It's not the osek b'mitzvah of the levayah. It's the osek b'mitzvah of kovod hameis, az misfanim mit dem meis and there's nothing else. Dos iz a yitzchesed shel emes. There is no you, there's no mitzvahs, there's the meis u'kvodo. Listening, habeisei, chesed shel emes means there is no you, there is no mitzvahs, because that means, tracht nisht in gantzen meg in the meis, tracht meg in the mitzvah. Now you understand what chesed is? Az mitut a andere mitzvah tzuzamen mit dos, it's not total devoted, hisbatlus to the meis u'kvodo, and his kovod. To pashut davka, bais, it's chesed shel emes. That's what chesed is. Avraham is mechadesh this. It's the last of his nisyonos. It's the last of complete his batlus to chesed, in ganzen, that there's nothing but the kavod hameis and the chesed for the meis. And the Bnei Cheis are mushpa from it. They're seeing pele, pele ployim. And then he gets up, Vayavo Avraham lispod l'Sarah v'livkosah. You know what's the livkosah? Tzaveinu. The Rishonim ask the kasha: why was the crying less, livkosah? So some Rishonim say she was old. Some Rishonim say she was mosa atzmah l'din; it was her fault, chamasi alecha, because she had taanos on Avraham, so hamosa din is chayav misa. In the Rosh, Rishonim, there's big talk. Ich vil gezogt a pashut. Pashut. The hesped, which is b'ikar for who? For the kavod hameis. So that was a lot. The livkosah is prezentlach. You see from the Rishonim, they didn't cry because she was old. Prezentlach was less. The hesped, the kavod hameis, that was the ikar. The livkosah started דין בכיה. The Rishonim even talk that l'choira בכיה comes before hesped, says halacha, so why here is hesped before בכיה? And the teretz is, yetzdik is hesped. The בכיה is for zich. The בכיה is for yourself. Yourself. Avraham says it's not now. Now it's lispod l'Sarah v'livkosah מעט. You know, it's interesting how much emphasis went into buying it, buying, buying. So he said over because we don't want the goyim later to claim it's theirs. The Ramban says that's a chelek of the nisayon, right? That he shouldn't have tainus, how you took and you made me buy it. The Ran ... a kasha, heelt a mech. Azoi fregt: l'choira, each nisayon, once he passed it, it was done, right? So why did he have to pay for it at the end? It should have worked out. He was ready to pay for it, and he wasn't meharher, and then it should have worked out that he got it. Why l'maaseh did he end up paying for it? So there's a gevaldige Chofetz Chaim al haTorah. ... Chofetz Chaim. Zogt the Chofetz Chaim, ... memusal ... That's it. Even if you can get it for free, you better pay for it. ... So you do it the maaseh that the Chofetz Chaim was makpid to Rav Hirsch Leibinson when his eidim was niftar. ... You want to talk about Rav Hirsch, a malach. The oilam was dying to give it to him for free. The Chevra Kadisha said, We have people who'll pay for it. ... Chofetz Chaim ... the mishpachos ... So pashut the pshat is a man has to be koneh. A kinyan, it could be ... we could talk, it's not ...
Right now, the efshar habeisai. I think there's a vort over here. V'kesef mali yitnenu li. Avraham started out with a statement: I pay full top dollar for it, because if I try to get a bargain on it, maybe it's feltin kavod habayis. I was thinking about it for years. Vas b'kesef mali. You know, usually when you want to go into a business deal, you don't show your cards at first, as they say. Don't come and say, B'kesef mali, you pay everything. I'll pay. And then you're here, you're back and forth. B'kesef mali yitnenu li. I will say, ... deductions. Don't take off any money. And the teretz is, I see you have ... you should have ... Avraham is saying, for kovod, for Sarah, ich tzol, vos mutzol, gei tzoln. Dos iz the kovod acher fun Sarah. Avraham is showing ... akruvos, akruvos, from Afray, from the mamer from Yisroel, ... from a mensch, a Yid. The Bnei Ches are a completely different people. Vayakom hasadeh v'hamearah asher bo, l'kumah haysa. Chevron is not the same after that. The Bnei Ches were not the same after that. Lo chazal l'vayer habeisai. It wasn't the same Bnei Ches. You know what the Bnei Ches are? The Rishonim fregen a kashya: Bnei Ches is the same people Avraham Avinu was wanting to do with, because they're horrible middos. No, isn't that the story with Bnei Ches? In the next parsha we have, Avraham says, Please don't take a wife from the Bnei Canaan, because they're terrible. ... the Bnei Ches. You forgot the episode before the Bnei Ches. The tendency is chesed shel emes. The hashpa, when you see it, is so strong, it turned the whole Eretz Canaan upside down. אפילו המקומים מבני חת, אל המפמחת, the stores, מדהיקומים לגמול חסד. But I thought they're not baalei chesed. I thought that's the whole, Ki im al ha'aretz v'al ha'moladet telech. Get away from the Bnei Ches. Don't take from them. Isn't that what the whole story is? Even that, when mushpa, even our Bnei Ches have the eisek. When mushpa, when they saw chesed shel emes, when it's emes, chavdei Hashem, can medurchbrechen a ganze velt. And the chesed is pure. There is nothing that could stop it. There is nothing that could—it's klar and it's mashpia. And the chesed is chesed shel emes. V'dem, rabosai, vil ich zogen pshat. Vos iz geven der nisayon dort? Dos iz der teives. The nisayon is geven vi Avraham Avinu tzugeben. The nisyonos were all, like I explained to you, yesoidus. Vos er, avange shtelt, mazria, he was planting koiches in Klal Yisrael. He planted this koach called chesed shel emes. ... Mit a mazel gevorn unzer gadol. You know, every time ... It's a very sharp line. It's too sharp, but it's too sharp, all right. I like the line. It's a good line, I have to say it. Every time a gadol goes away, ... Many organizations do that. Whenever a gadol goes away, ... Anybody besides hears—oh, I forgot, there's a camera. Okay. ... chesed shel emes. ... Avraham Avinu ... gadol. ... And the teretz is, they saw nesius. They saw the hoybinkeit. Avraham comes and they say, ... the hoybin a mensch. קוק, חסד של אמת. Look. You know, the Rishonim—my zeide speaks out b'arichus in the sefer, I don't have the time now—every prat of the hanhagos kavod that Avraham gives to the ... ... right? Speak, right? ... right? ... right? ... ... The Medrash already points out the ...
Tell me when a person's distraught, and he doesn't have time for the guy on his corner that's driving him. I'm gonna tell you a maise. I wasn't sure, yes, yeah, I'm gonna say it. My brother Eli reminded me this week, reminded me. He says, Aaron, tell me, do you remember who was sitting in the hearse together with Abba and us, the family, in the front seat when we went to the airport to Zaydie's levaya? Either I was not in the hearse, I don't remember, or maybe I was so tumulted, I just don't remember. I didn't remember. Then I started to remember that there was a story about it. He says to me, Ploni u'Ploni. I don't want to say the name. Ploni is a famous person, a person who runs around Borough Park who's not well. He's just not well. He's a person that Nebach was hit by it, and he had an accident, which is even with that, he had a brain accident as a kid. He runs around to levayos, to chasunas, he makes noise at every... Finally say he makes noise at every bris. I'm sure everybody already knows who I'm talking about. So he pushed his way to sit in the front seat together with my father. My brother turns to me and says, Eli, tell me, anybody but Abba, wouldn't throw him out of the front seat? Excuse me. Abba didn't say one word. A Yid, a ... Till today. Think about it. Chesed shelemes, koyach to be able. That it's not about me; it's all about chesed and chesed and vayter chesed. It's not my father's levaya; it's the levaya of my father. Not my father's levaya. I say it was thousands of people. I can tell you how many people. Thousands. It was a big rav, ... thousands of people. He had an unbelievable levaya. Sitting together with my father, that's chayim shtuk. He does it in Brisk, he does, he does it. That's what he does. Chumras hayid, ... yiddishkeit. My father had to let him drive with us all the way to the airport, sitting in the front seat. Shmuel Yadoini. That's called achuzas kever. That he's mishtatef. You're welcome, Avraham, yishtatef l'am haaretz ... The middos he remembered at that moment, even at the levaya. There's a hanhaga of middos. ... l'Chassidi avos. We say every day, ... chasdei avos. What is the chasdei avos? So I know Avraham did tremendous chesed. Yitzchak, I don't know. Some look at the ... the medrash, mashma Avraham, Yitzchak carried on with the ... of Avraham. It was also ... chesed. Just the Torah doesn't talk about it or write about it. Yaakov, it's not ... maybe ... maaseh avos. And each one of the avos had his ... So the ... fact is ... and he says two terutzim. Efsher zogt men, muchach. You have to say, v'zoicher chasdei, that you promised them chesed regard, not that they did chesed. Because Yankev, Yitzchok, I don't know, we don't see groyse chesed. So it has to be v'zoicher chasdei. Then he says a vort, and I don't know if he means exactly what we're saying, but I think it could mean that, and if not, we're saying it on our own. Every mitzvah and every ma'aseh of Torah and avodah that they did, there was no zich there. There was always ... chasdei avos. ... Torah. Even when you learn Torah, I say, Torah is chesed. I was showing, it's shayach. Everything has in it. It's about zich, u'mitchasdei ... A mensch could daven. He can do so much chesed. Davening ... zich, so it's zich. And davening ... but it's chesed. And learn Torah and make zich means ein kavod? Does he mean the kavod of the Eibishter? Does he mean the kavod of Klal Yisroel? Does he mean kavod haTorah? V'zoicher chasdei avos. I need one more minute, rabosai. Where did I get it from?
Where did I get it from? I'll tell you where I got it from. There's a shmues, I beg you, from Sholom Schwadron in this week's parsha. You got to see it. I'll say it b'kitzur, because of time, but you got to look at it, all right? Reb Sholom brings the Medrash. Vayakom Avram. Avram went, and he was koiver Sarah. Shteit in Medrash, Rodeif tzedakah v'chesed, yimtza chayim, tzedakah v'kavod. That Avram burying Sarah is called tzedakah and chesed, and that's stam reidiv. So Reb Sholom ran it. You know, the maaseh, someone knows the maaseh, with his son. His son was in his hand. Fragt him, a baal teshuvah, Shalom aleichem, Reb Sholom Schwadron, where are you going with your son? I'm going to the doctor. I'm going to the doctor. Zogt him, I want to tell you something. What makes a chiluk between a mensch and a beheima? You know, beheimos also care for their children. But when you go to the doctor, does a maaseh beheima? No, it's a maaseh adam, he says. Beheima ... kifer. He says, because the beheima cares because it's mine. It's my son. It's my child. A Yid takes his son to the doctor for the child. ... We're so removed from this almost. And then he brings a maaseh from the Chofetz Chaim. The Chofetz Chaim walked into a makolet, a storekeeper, for to give shem Torah mitzvahs. And he started telling him, My envious chusim, my envious chusim. If chesed can stand Klal Yisrael upton, the guy looks at him and says, Rebbe, I don't do any chesed. I get paid for everything I get. I've never done a favor for anyone in my life. I charge.
